ORANGERY HISTORY
The orangery dates back to the early 17th century, introduced to England by the Dutch. Traditionally orangeries, predominately ornate in design were either and extension or a free standing structure. The Orangery was a statement of grandeur, the opulent green house would often store exotic citrus plants which would perish during the unforgiving winters. With the orangeries popularity rising throughout Europe and the demands of the wealthy increasing, architects became inspired create ever more elaborate designs. The original orangery would be constructed from a southerly aspect to attract the heat from the winter sun, and would be made from hardwood, brick and glass. Today hard wood is still a popular choice especially on listed buildings, but now modern materials such as aluminium, UPVC and fibreglass are being used to replicate this elaborate structure. Using contemporary materials enables the orangery the benefit of a classically designed structure at an affordable price.
